York University

Yesterday was one big rush. I tried to cram in York University’s Open Day in between lunch and my driving lesson…not a good idea, since it took us over 2 hours to get there and back. Who knew it was so far away from my house?!

Anyway, so we walked in, sat down and listened to a couple of mini lectures. One of the guys said that 10% of the grade is assessed on speaking. Why, I have absolutely no idea. Since I’m not assessed on speaking now, why do it over the next three years?! I don’t get it. And it’s not even proper speaking, it’s contributing to discussions…how the hell can they assess that? I can just picture having someone in my group who talks all the time or something and doesn’t let anyone else say anything…blergh.

So the next guy starts talking, and hands out a couple of poems in Old Norse. On Vikings. I swear, it was barely the same alphabet! I was like, ‘What the hell is this?!’ But I’m open minded, so I decided to give the guy a fair chance, atlhough he didn’t change my opinion, and he talked about Vikings in the present tense, which certainly didn’t help. Plus, a lot of the things he said were complete crap. I was going to argue but since I was in a room with lots of people and he seemed like a really nice guy despite everything, I decided not to.

So it turns out you have to do at least 1 module of literature in a foreign language (either Old Norse, Latin, Spanish, German, French or Italian I think). Guess I should’ve read the course details better…because there is no way in hell I’m doing literature in a foreign language, since I don’t know any foreign languages!! I haven’t even mastered English properly yet! If I was really pushed I’d probably pick Latin, but I’m not good enough to be assessed on it and for it to count towards my degree. I think though, that I applied for Literature and Linguistics, which means I don’t actually have to do the module, but I can’t remember lol. Still, at least it helps me narrow down my choices of university :D

Aww Pom’s got an infection, and he has to wear one of those cone-type things. He’s really upset and doesn’t want to do anything: eat, drink, go out. He doesn’t even get up when you go to the door and look in on him – and normally he jumps right up and starts jumping in the air and spinning round lol. It sounds weird, but he really does do that :D Hopefully he’ll get better soon

Yeah, I know what you mean about speaking, but it’s just so they can tell if you’re confident in front of people :)

    Poor Pom:sick:
I hope he’ll get better soon:)

10% assessed on speaking? That’s… I don’t know, not very much, but still… I don’t like speaking much in class, but discussions isn’t too hard. And the contributing to discussions is probably so they can see if you make an effort to get a good grade and that you have learned something or have opinions, that’s what it’s like at my school at least.

Old Norse, hard… I know some of it, but it’s hard for someone from England probably. Nah, I’m sure you’ll make it:)

Hope Pom will get better soon:love:

Oh wow, that’s a long drive! We’re graded on speaking in class too, well participation I guess, but it’s also whether you do notes or not. That does not sound like a fun lecture at all. Oh goodness, literature? I can’t even believe that, even though some of my friends are taking that. Oh poor Pom! I hope he gets well soon!

If 10% of my degree was marked on speaking I’d be screwed lol. If you do end up doing that, you should be the person who always gives their opinion (atleast you’d get good marks!)
If a guy handed me a poem in Norse, I’d be really confused, though he does sound like a nice guy like you said.
I think if you DID have to do that module, then you should pick Latin, as you do know a bit.
I hope Pom gets better soon, give him a hug from me :) Cya!

The Viking class and speaker actually sounds cool IMO. 10% for speaking? I’d fail that. I’m sure you’ll do fine.

Latin… lovely language. I was horrified to learn that I can’t take it in highschool cuz they only do Latin 1 & 3 every other year, and Latin 2 & 4 on the others. I can’t start out in 1, so I have to wait a year :( But it’s a very fun language… and semi-easy seeing as it’s like all roots and stuff.

I know it’s cruel but animals look so funny in those cones! I remember when my put (sorry, Minty, he’s a cat lol) hurt his leg and had a cone, bless. I couldn’t do another language either, same with you.. English is hard enough to master lol. Good luck though whatever happens!! :)

I can tell you this, Italian is the easiest language cause it has the purest vowel sounds, I know cause I had to take all of those languages in college cause I was a voice major and had to sing in all of them, English is actually the hardest language to learn and sing, due to multiple pronuciation of simliar vowel sounds plus the combinations. That’s why its hard for foriegn people to learn english too. Italian is really easy and so pretty.

sorry it cut me off! LOL! I wish you luck though, I am sure you can do it, I did! Those cone thing really stink, I hope he gets it off soon and gets rid of that infection! I love this vector! Really unique than most I see! You got awesome skills!

Ergh I hate rushing. I always end up rushing to do homework and stuff, eck.

Lectures are stupid lol. But assessing on speaking is a bit… I don’t know… Odd? Yeah, thats just stupid, contributing… Someone could just take charge of talking like you said. Lame.

Lmao, I can barely understand the poem ‘Jabberwocky’, let alone a poem in Old Norse! Gee, thats a bit crap lol. We’ve just finished doing our poetry topic and the worst it got was ‘Bedd Gelert’ which is in an oldish sort of english.

But thats just stupid lol. Why bother doing poetry in another language… It doesn’t make sense at all to me. If I was forced to, I would choose either French or Latin.

Lol, so I take it you’re not keen on going to that university that you have to do poetry in a foreign language at. Lmao :P I would probably do the same though hehe.

Awwh poor pompom :( I find those cone things rather amusing lol. Theres this dog wearing one in te film ‘Cats and Dogs’ and its got all techy stuff inside it… Haha. Aww… Maybe he’s caught the people virus that seems to be going around (the world). Poor Pompom :( I hope he gets better :D
Much love to you & Pom :)

Wow learning a forgien language:P I’m still in high school and still learning french…extremly boring in my opinion, i know a bit of spanish and it’s somewhat similar to french. I too if forced to learn another lanaguage and had those choices, I’d choose latin.
