“The truth is only a version,” Doris Canary says in Mister Sandman (and it’s even more significant that this sounds like “The truth is only aversion” to eldest daughter Sonja).

Just like anything else, there is no one truth in photography. Even though photos are often interpreted as being closer to reality than most other mediums, as with anything else they depict the story the photographer chooses to tell.

A photograph captures the smallest part of reality, and then it’s subjected to processing and editing until it gives the right impression…mostly utopia.¹

A lot of life is…not dystopia as such, but something I like to call the “unwanted”. Those necessary bits that aren’t part of life’s beauty, the lights and the cables and the rubbish bins and the dying and the surviving.

Seeing the beauty in that is harder. But worth searching for, and more of an achievement when it’s captured, regardless of the medium.
