So for a while now I’ve been a bit back and forth about what direction this blog should go in. It’s always been a reflection of my life, and for my whole adult life (up until around a year ago), my posts were sporadic but mostly focused around things happening in my life: going to places, doing things, people generally.
Visually speaking, my life is now much more boring. We haven’t been on holiday for ages (and we don’t have any plans to go anywhere interesting any time soon), and other than occasional events and general socialising, my time is mostly spent working, going for a walk, swimming, sleeping, watching TV and reading. I’m the happiest I’ve ever been, but it’s not exactly Instagram or blog friendly.
When I actually sat down to think about what I wanted to do with this blog, I realised that it’s always been a place where I talk about what’s going on in my life, and it should continue to be that way even if there aren’t as many pretty photos and crazy travel escapades.
Instead I’ve decided I’ll document my self-employed journey: the realities of running a business, successes and failures, my opinions on various things, and some practical tips and insights too. There will also be a mix of personal posts as and when things come up (Ginge will be something I post about soon), and then a few little tips/tutorial posts on WordPress and things like that.
Originally I had plans to have different subdomains up and running for this site, but it’s turned out to be more than I can keep up with, so what I’m planning to do is keep the Bakes subdomain and work on it gradually, revamp a few existing pages, sort out some super old “web 1.0” stuff that dates back to when I was a teenager, and get Joe to recode this theme in a non-Genesis format (because Genesis is driving me up the wall but I love the look of this theme).
As part of that, I’m also planning to take this blog more seriously in terms of consistency and personal branding. I’ve already designed a bunch of new pins in the new style, and I’m going to go back over all the old posts gradually and fix them up a
I used to say things like, “Oh, I’d love to work on my blog/go to the gym more/eat better/work on my other websites…but I can’t, because of my JOB.” Then it became because of my business, and transitioning to actually letting go of things and taking more of a step back. Well, now things are ticking over nicely, I should be able to free up enough time to get shit done. Planning is key to all those things for me; my motivation is fine, it’s just being consistent. I’m great at telling other people what to do to blog consistently, and then never managing it myself. So I’m starting off by making a list of new post ideas, getting them written, and then worrying about images and meta descriptions and stuff like that later; batching typically works well for me when I keep things simple and don’t add too many tasks into the mix.
Here’s to a new chapter – let’s see how it goes!
