A day in the life: reset edition

The last couple of weeks have been absolutely crazy, work-wise. Crazy in that everything happened all at once: accounts needing to be in, theme drama, lots of new customers, and a bunch of other stuff. In short, it means lots of nights of 3-4 hours’ sleep, far too many takeaways and too much caffeine, and a lot of not looking after myself. The only thing we’ve prioritised outside of the business has been feeding and medicating the cats.

After two weeks of nothing but crazy, I was just really craving silly things, like vegetables and sleep. So yesterday I thought I’d have a reset day. A reset day is where I basically decide to live an absolutely “perfect” day (within reason), to get back into some good habits and look after myself a bit better. This means things like not having chocolate for “breakfast” at 2pm, and actually getting dressed. So it’s not like my standards were massively high to start with (!), but that’s exactly why a reset day needed to be done.

Here’s an outline of my day. Is it exciting? Definitely not. If you’re looking for one of those “look at my awesome life” posts, this isn’t it. This is just one of the real life posts I do periodically. Enjoy!

9am – I didn’t wake up early because I went to bed around 2am. I started the day by reading two chapters of a business book, “The Hard Thing About Hard Things,” which has some interesting advice even if it’s designed for much bigger businesses than ours. I have a subscription to Scribd and I love it; it’s definitely one of my favourite apps. Then I quickly checked social media and replied to some notifications and messages.

9:20am – Got out of bed, cleaned the litter tray, fed the cats, drugged Ginge, drank some water. Then I did the washing up and sorted recycling while they ate. We had some friends knock on the door last night, so I didn’t get round to (couldn’t be bothered!) doing it any sooner. Photo is of Ginge being medicated, with his mega lizard tongue out.

9:45am – Did a quick YouTube workout (this one) in front of the TV. This took slightly longer than it should have done as Dee had thrown up on my dumbbells and I had to clean them before I could start…

10am – Washed, brushed my teeth, then put on some TV while writing a to do list for the day, working on some blog posts and replying to emails. We watched an episode and a half of Inside The Storm: Lessons From The Boardroom, which is a series on Amazon about huge businesses that ended up failing.

10:45am – Little task time: added new content to SmarterQueue to keep it topped up, cleaned up my desktop, updated the migration emails with more information based on questions we get asked a lot, and worked on formatting a blog post. Had a yoghurt for breakfast; my current obsession is salted caramel cheesecake yoghurts ;)

Breakfast

11ish – Went for a walk, to get some fresh air on a lovely spring day, plus is was a good chance to incorporate a trip to the post office and pick up a couple of things from the shop. Joe needed to send off his old passport in order to get a new one as we’re going to a thing in London in a few weeks that requires photo ID.

12:30pm – On our way back from our walk, we stopped at our local pub for a drink and so Joe could answer a couple of tickets.

Pub

1pm – Had lunch at home. I’ve been using up leftovers recently, so I had toasted pitta strips with salad, egg mayo, hummus and potato salad.

Lunch

1:15pm – Back to work. Worked on more blog post formatting, queued up a couple of posts, worked out some stuff with Stripe, did some sales chats and emails.

4pm – Had a snack of strawberries and light Ben and Jerry’s.

Ice cream

5:20pm – Drugged Ginge again. Cats weren’t asking for dinner so decided to feed them later instead; normally we feed them straight after drugging Ginge so he can get the taste out of his mouth. Since the days have started to get longer, the cats have been super confused about when they’re eating, so we’re trying to feed them more when they ask rather than at specific times, or we end up giving them two dinners. Had a slice of cold leftover pizza (not the healthiest – oops!)

6-9pm – Work, work, work. Watched a bit of TV while working, arranged lunch and calligraphy learning plans with a friend.

9pm-10pm – Had dinner, which was basically the same as lunch (!) Finished up the rest of my 10k steps. Played some Lords of Waterdeep on my tablet and watched Newsnight.

10pm – midnight – Sales emails and social media notifications, squeezing more people into the migration calendar, and writing up this blog post!

1am – Drugged Ginge again, fed cats dinner.

1:30am – Curled up in bed with a light-read book, Panic by Lauren Oliver, and the cats. Chief was by my legs, Halo next to me, and Ginge on the floor. Exhausted, but the best end to the day.

And that’s my day! How was your day?
